At the start of "The Queen of Hearts," the first of three robust and unpredictable tales included in The Queen of Hearts: Tales of Middle-Age Passion, Rosie Campbells husband leaves her in favor of his secretary. This potentially commonplace occurrence takes some highly unusual turns when Rosies therapist puts her on a powerful new anti-depressant and she finds herself with a whole new set of concerns.
"The Queen of Diamonds," features Lina Wolff, a wealthy widow with breast cancer and a religious bent. Fearing that she may not have much time left, Lina makes every attempt to find a man to love her, and when these fail, she calls on God for help. God respondsor appears to by pointing her in the direction of an uneducated drunk, and the relationship that ensues is full of surprises for both parties.
In "Me and Bobby DeNiro Out in Front of the BabaLand," a woman by the name of Rita (a painter whose canvases dont come close to reflecting the true extent of her fantasy life) finds the courage to confront her husband as a direct result of Robert DeNiro moving into the neighborhood.
Disturbingly dark and wickedly funny, The Queen of Hearts: Tales of Middle-Age Passion is true to life and right on target. A solace for those who have lost at love and a booster for those who think they might want to give it a try, this is the kind of collection thatlike a juicy secretgets passed on from friend to friend.
